Who gets Dome: Vikings or Twins?

Who gets Dome: Vikings or Twins?

A potential schedule conflict with the Twins could force the Vikings to move their Oct. 8 game against Detroit, but Vikings officials apparently are considering whether to challenge an agreement that gives the Twins priority in the Metrodome.
The conflict would arise if the Twins win the American League Central Division, giving them home-field advantage in the Division Series. Game 5 of the Division Series, if necessary, would be Oct. 8 -- the same day the Vikings and Lions are scheduled to play.

The Twins' lease with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission always has given them postseason scheduling priority, but that agreement expired after the 2004 season. Since then, the Twins have been operating under the same terms without a written agreement.

Bill Lester, the commission's executive director, and Dave St. Peter, Twins president, both said the Twins have priority despite the status of the agreement. But Lester Bagley, Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development, said: "We are trying to explore all of our options."

Asked if the Vikings have accepted the Twins' priority, Bagley said: "All I can say is we're exploring all of our options."

St. Peter, however, said, "Nothing has changed. The Twins have every intention should we get home-field advantage, of playing in the Metrodome [that day] and being the only game in the Dome."

Assuming the Twins maintain priority, the Vikings would have two options:

Moving their game against the Lions to Monday, Oct. 9 or swapping home games with the Lions. In that scenario, the teams would play Oct. 8 in Detroit and Dec. 10 at the Metrodome.

However, a person with knowledge of the situation said the Lions already have refused to swap games, in part because the arrangement would leave them playing four of their final five games on the road.

An NFL spokesman said a tentative schedule change could be announced next week. The spokesman added that the NFL is "aware of the potential conflict and we are looking at our options and discussing them with the teams."

The Metrodome is one of three multi-use stadiums that house Major League Baseball and NFL teams; the others are Oakland's McAfee Coliseum and Miami's Dolphin Stadium. The Twins are scheduled to move into a baseball-only ballpark in 2010.

Would a playoff game for the Twins make more money than a Vikings game?
