I wanted to make this a thread cause I think it is important. Someone mentioned that they announced we are the most penalized team on TV. I am confused. Looks like that belongs to Oakland and Green Bay.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8880414/Fairly-solid-Four-AFC-East-contenders-are-among-least-penalized-teams-

Yardage Penalized:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/sortableStatsTeam?div=NFL&stype=offense&stable=downs&stat=penYds&dir=descending&season=regular

Penalties:

Any thoughts?

it might have been John Madden who mentioned that.

also, I believe we lead in oline penalties, perhaps that quote was taken out of context, or maybe Madden's jus tlost it.

We total 1379 yards in penalties. With a quick look at the numbers, that looks like the most in the NFL.

That is not right. I went through all the box scores and we have 73 penalties for 558 yards.

Penalties happen.....but the type of penalty and the timing of the penalty to me are just as frustrating if not more so.

How the hell do we line up offsides 3 times on D...with one of them being a D-Back (Sapp)

We have also had receivers line up offsides...not sure how the do that either.

I was very upset at our offsides today....especially Sapp

midgensa
12-07-2008, 09:16 PM
Yeah it seemed much worse because we had the four offsides in the first quarter a lone. All in all not a terrible day penalty yardage wise ... but we really need to get the penalties under control.

How can anyone claim that this team is well coached with all the penalties. We lead the NFL in flags. And if you consider all the really bad NFL teams out there, I just have to say, this aspect is not well coached. What is going on ? Can someone teach these guys to not get flags on almost every down ?

This will kill us in the playoffs, against disciplined teams like the Giants.

I'm not surprised by the topic starter and the subject. It is an issue and one I'm certain they discuss, Childress is tough about penalties and I know he talks about it often. Most of the time its up the Players and wether or not they decide to create penalties. Jared Allen has had a few, so has Ray Edwards, Childress cannott control what they do rather remind them not to do it.

This is the second game that I almost could not watch due to the unbelievable number of penalties.

I actually am WAY more willing to forgive defensive penalties than offensive ones, because offensive penalties tend to kill drives, and defensive ones are about being aggressive, which is o.k.

But still, I worry about us in the playoffs vs. more disciplined teams.

Could it be in terms of yardage? Although, with 16 or 17 more, you'd think those other two teams would have to have higher penalty yardage as well.

NBC also said it the week before.
But I am going to have to give Kudos to Marc on this because if you ad up game by game it is only 79 ... the other number (91) is the total penalties our opponents have made (we are number 1 in yards gained by opponents penalties).

We are a defensive team, yes, I know, we have AP.
The Vikings outside of Vikings circles are known for it's extreme defense.
Not to mention JA attacks his responsibilities with a certain exuberance.
If we can shut down running teams like the Giants (last year) and Carolina.

If it means we'll have to eat some penalties to make most teams one dimensional in their offense, well, as my dad says, "You can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs."

I am actually down with the logic that to "make an omlet, you have to break some eggs". Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the flags (even if it is frustrating to watch at times), if we get the "W".

As I recall now, the Patriots led the NFL, or were in the top 10 in penalties, when they got at least one of their rings.

A penalty every now and then isn't a big deal IMHO, however, what I don't like is:

a.
One at a bad time (3rd and inches).
b.
The same penalty more than 3 times (encroachment).
c.
Illegal shift.
d.
Late hit out of bounds.

Those types are just a lack of focus and are unacceptable.

Any pre-snap penalties are not cool, and the four, almost 5 offside penalties against our defense was just as perturbing. >:(

Defensive penalties are not as bad as offensive ones.

Back when Bill Parcels used to coach, in the offseason, he had his staff crunch numbers going way back. Their finding: if an offense gets a penalty, it reduces the chance of scoring on that drive, by 50 % !!

That is why Parcells used to go nuts when his offense would get a flag.

I don't understand coaches who take a lax attitude toward this.

I don't agree with that, in many instances a defensive flag either gives the other team great field position or a free play.
I for one am sick when that off sides flag flies to the field and the other QB can just throw the ball up without any fear of a pick.

add the 823 yards of defensive penalties to those and the Vikes have been leading the league in penalties it came up during the Sunday night game with the Bears
