View Full Version : Roster moves begin; Nance to be cut

Update: The Vikings have informed receiver Martin Nance he is going to be released. Nance had a solid training camp and could land on another team’s roster. This could mean the Vikings are going to keep five receivers.

That's too bad.
I like him as a WR.
But we are pretty deep at that position.

I think at this point with what we have for talent i would have rather kept him and let him develop than to keep ferguson on the roster this year personally. While Ferg may be better now, I wonder how close the competition would be a year from now.

He definitely made a good case to make the roster.
Got to believe he was higher than Jaymar, meaning they will probably only go with 5 and that Ferguson will stay on the roster.

Yep, I see it now.

Too bad about Nance, this year's Jason Carter (who was slated to stick with Jacksonville before he got hurt).

Mozes was pretty much gone when they drafted Sullivan and Sumrall never really had a shot despite looking pretty good against the Ravens.

Regardless, damn I wish they would take a chance on Nance and let Ferg go.

I need to go check the 53 man roster thread and see if I was wrong on Mozes.
Can't remember.
Think I had Sumrall and Chase going to the practice squad wtih Jones and Norwell getting cut.

You read that Marrdro?

Chase Johnson & Dan Mozes (2 of your future boys) will be cut. There goes that experienced depth you were talking about that we had on the line.

Who backs up Hicks during McKinnie's 4 game suspension & who backs up Hutch?

To be fair, you were wrong about Fergie last year too (as was I). Perhaps he'll surprise us all again. At the very least, we know that with Fergie we get badass blocking and great veteran leadership. I am quite happy having both of those qualities on a very young WR corps and an offense that will rely heavily on the run as long as AD is productive.

Cuts continue (http://blogs.startribune.com/vikingsblog/?p=1865)

The Vikings must have their roster set at 53 players by 5 p.m. today and we’re in place to follow it all. Hopefully we will get the official list of cuts by around 5:30 p.m.

As reported in this morning’s paper a group of players were told Friday that they were going to be released. This includes linebackers Rufus Alexander and David Herron, wide receivers Martin Nance and Nate Jones, offensive tackle Chase Johnson, center Dan Mozes, cornerback Brandon Sumrall, tight end Braden Jones and defensive end Chris Norwell.

also from the article...

It also will be interesting to see if the Vikings claim a few players off waivers or sign a veteran. For instance, the fact Alexander and Herron are both going to be let go would indicate the Vikings have their eye on another linebacker.

I wonder who that might be?

Mattran started out at C but during practice and in the preseason game where he dinged his ankle he was playing LT and looking like he had good positioning and long arms that he was using do do a good job. I also saw Sullivan playing LG. Not sure if it was a trial or whether they wanted him to do more than 1 thing.

Seems this staff likes to have everybody able to play/backup more than one position.
Better overall depth if they can pull it off.

Yeah, Nance had some nice plays this preseason.
But I also thought Allison stepped up, and I do like Ferg's vet presence, attitude and STs.
Not looking like we'll go with the 6 WRs, hopfully we can slide a few of these guys to the PS...in case we need more depth later!
Still a chance, I'd guess, that they keep Reynaud or JJ based on ST abilities...

Leman has been good looking on special teams this year and is looking like he could be our Heath Farwell this year.

Looking at the roster, if we only keep 4 safeties, we could conceivably keep 7 wide receivers...
Or 4 quarterbacks.
That being said, if we keep 5, we are still in good position to hang onto Jaymar or Reynaud.

This comes as no great surprise but rookie quarterback John David Booty has made the cut, beating out veteran Brooks Bollinger for the No. 3 job.

The move was expected and will be official when the team announces its 53-man roster later today.

Neither quarterback distinguished himself in the preseason, but the Vikings traded up to take Booty in the draft and would probably not be able to get him through waivers and onto the practice squad.

UPDATE: Rookie sixth-round pick Jaymar Johnson has been released. The guess is they want him to be on the practice squad.

Rookie DE Martail Burnett has been released.

Rookie DE Leger Douzable has been released.

Bollinger & Hauschka will be cut soon and if Radovich gets put on the PUP due to his shoulder, Madieu Williams could end up on PUP or IR with his neck, then McCann, Leman and Reynaud could be on the bubble with 2 more moves needed

I did include McCann, I'm just wondering if the Vikes will keep Abdullah for special teams and with Williams neck; or if another safety will pop up and they'll make a grab for him and let Husain go.

That might be the biggest problem for 4 of these fringe players an up grade coming up from another roster release

Dee McCann was release so looks like the Vikes are at 60

I can't see them cutting Boulware, especially with Madieu's injury.
I'd say if a safety goes, it will likely be Frampton, but thats just My opinion.
Also i bet a TE goes, unless they plan on having someone play both TE/backup FB.
If it happens, I bet Mills gets the boot.

Mills' job is safe.
As is Frampton's.
There was already talks of Boulware getting cut before his injury.
Abdullah is simply the better player.
They may go the route of putting Boulware on the PUP list, and re-evaluating the decision between Abdullah and Boulware later down the road.

how do you figure mills and frampton are safe?
Has mills wowed everyone in training camp and preseason?
4TE are a lot to carry, i'd be willing to bet one goes, and it wont be shank or sauce, so that leaves mills and dugan.
Dugan has a nice long contract with the vikes he signed 2 years back, so obviously they like him, which is why i see Mills as the odd man out.

Frampton is also by no means safe.
i had forgotten about Abdullah but that doesn't mean that frampton is safe.
limited playing time, has really not shown anything.

keep in mind also, they need to get to 53, but I can't see them staying with only 4 dends all season long.
What happens if Edwards reaggrivates his back?
or Robison gets hurt?
What if Allen slips up and gets suspended?
we're looking very thin.My bet is they pick up someone who gets released within the next week, so take away another roster spot for that (possibly)

Just might be the toughest day of the year for Vikings fans and players.
:'(

Wyms can supposedly play some DE too...so he might be the top backup to Ray at LDE too...?
As far as FA pickups, I'd keep an eye open for a better DT rotation option too...not to mention, possibly a OT!
Not sure if we'd get away with it, but it seems like some of those OL guys might belong on the PS for a year or so...

6 S and 6 CB is too many.
I think, that last year we had 4 and 5...6 LBs is normal for us, but how has Leman played?
I know Erin has played well, and that Farwell being hurt opens up competition there some, but if they like other ST options better...maybe we go with 5 LBs and use Ferguson or Tyrell or another CB/S for that ST spot...?

With Boulware, Williams and Radovich's health 2 could be going on a list either IR or PUP, a little worried William's neck is serious for this season.

Mills has to stick around, Childress gave up a possible friendship will Bilicheat by nabbing him last year ;D

:o
I was kind of wondering about that too...or, maybe to the PUP for 6 weeks to see how its reacting...

Floop Belicheat!
But, I wouldn't keep a player just to be a thorn there either.

Not Leman!

Too bad we didn't keep Hauschka as a kickoff specialist.

And we must be saving Boulware for next season.

Guess that answer's that!
Here's another list...though Herron isn't on it, they mention he is on the startrib blog...?

mountainviking

My guess is the multiple position depth...Dugan can play TE or FB and Tahi can take some reps at RB if, God Forbid, we need more depth there!

Herron was not released as it was claimed. Things make sense now. Rufus and Herron were battling for the last LB spot, and was suprised that they would both be cut.

We are very thin at safety. If somrone goes down we are at framton. That's scary

Terrence Holt was also released. the second player I think that could be looked at is him. He would make a nice reserve if nothing else, and I think he also has played some special teams

if it gets to that point, isn't Donovan Darius still looking for work?

I think so but doesn't he have a really bad knee?

You read that Marrdro?

Chase Johnson & Dan Mozes (2 of your future boys) will be cut. There goes that experienced depth you were talking about that we had on the line.

Who backs up Hicks during McKinnie's 4 game suspension & who backs up Hutch?

My boys huh......Obviously you confuse me with that guy named Singer who sticks up for every player on the roster.

If they aren't the best fit, out with thier ass, in with the new ones.
You know that is the way I feel since Denny shitcanned my boy Joey.
;D
;D

On a serious note, though, I got off Mozes for Sullivan about 2 or 3 weeks ago and I have had Radovich ahead of Chase for about 2 weeks.
Truth be told I had (in my 53 man roster prediction) both Mozes and Chase going to the practice squad.

You need to stay up with the times my friend.

Refus surprises me. I thought he played well in the preseason. I wonder who they have there eye on. Why wasn't Leman cut before Rufus? We must be keeping him.

I think we had some early indications that his knee might not be 100%.
My guess is they will move him to the PS and continue to work with him.
He will either be on the squad this year (injury to another player) or next year.
