View Full Version : God, please let this not be us in '08

Heard this on local sports radio. It was an ex-Bronco saying how "We had all the pieces from the previous Super Bowl year there. We had all the weapons, except Elway, the star QB. We went 6-10".

First thought: Gawd, that could be us this year. I hope not !!

Takeaway: you can have awesome weapons, and if you don't have a stud QB, you can go 6-10. Ouch.

God forbid anyone having a positive attitude on this forum....pathetic :o

I see Viking fans being ridiculed all the time on other sites...this is a good example of why.

I'm a Vikings fan... and I've been saying we're going to beat the Colts in the Super Bowl since May.

As long as you're not generalizing or anything....

Well I didn't say ALL Viking fans so ...no I was not generalizing...

Wouldn't we have had to win the Super Bowl in '07 for that to be us in '08?

Our team is on the rise, not the fall.

Well we still have the QB we had last year
;)
Plus you can't make me believe we're going to do worse than last year. the additions created us at least one more win

Here are some of the changes and injuries that the Broncos had from 1998 to 1999:

-as mentioned, replaced HOF QB coming off his best season (QB rating) with Brian Griese
-lost 3-time all-pro RB Terrell Davis after four games and replaced with Orlandis Gary
-lost future HOF TE Shannon Sharpe after four games and replaced with Dwayne Carswell
-lost all-pro LB John Mobley and replaced with rookie Al Wilson
-lost 2-time all-pro FS Steve Atwater and replaced with Eric Brown
-also swapped LT Harry Swayne for Matt Lepsis and CB Darren Gordon for Dale Carter

So other than that, they were the exact same team.

In other words, don't worry.

If you want to just look at how the QB play will affect the team this year, I'd tell you that it will be better than last year.
The rest of the roster is improved.
So we should be an improved team.
Luck/chance/injuries come into play, but you can't predict that and right now the Vikes look to be one of the better teams in the league.

This will happen to the pack not us... when you have a franchise QB and he leaves... usually that teams suffers.

Well, I personally have us at 10-6 and making the playoffs this year. So much for pessimism. I also see us making at least the NFC Championship Game.

I am not saying we will go 6-10. In fact, with AP and our defense, I would be very surprised. But I am just saying, the thought did run through my mind when they mentioned not having the QB there...

I am still not convinced that Tarvaris can really read an NFL defense and then react accordingly, though.

there is no reason that would even resemble us...

A) havent won a superbowl
B) dont have a superstar QB.. Jackson is on the rise and i believe will be great, but not there yet
C) we didnt lose any starter of significance
D) we've added pieces to the team that were lackluster in the previous year

I see zero reason to believe that Tarvaris will be great. What can you base that on ?

When I look at Tarvaris, I see some things I like: arm strength, the fact that he doesn't beeyatch and moan like some QBs, his decent running ability. I also see some things I don't like. I am not convinced that Tarvaris really can read defenses. I see bad decisions. I see throwing off the back foot. I see him flee the pocket the moment it begins to collapse. I see bad throws.

None of this says "great". I don't see how you see that. Please explain...

I hate to state the obvious, but we missed the playoffs last year due to Tarvaris.

And the difference between going 11-5 and going 7-9 can come down to bad QB decisions. That is what worries me.

I would have never guessed that you don't think Tarvaris has it in him.

Somehow I get the impression that you don't have much faith in Tarvaris.
You are consistent!

I have about zero "faith" in Tarvaris (Faith is blind trust, the opposite of knowledge and experience).

But I do hope he proves me wrong. I personally hope that the guy does an "Eli" and proves me wrong, and I hope I can get on here soon and say how he proved me wrong.

Until then... ::)

ANY NFL QB can either turn into Eli Manning or turn into Akili Smith, and please, let's not pretend otherwise...

I can't lie when the subject comes up and start saying that I think Tarvaris is going to be great, because I have not seen it yet.

As has been stated hundreds of times in response to your disapproval to Tarvaris....he is going to start his second year in the NFL.
It is too early to judge one way or the other.

really? he was the only reason to missing the playoffs? how about the other players that made mistakes? Bollinger fumbling in the lions OT game, shanko dropping td passes (most notably the KC one, where tjack, didnt play), poor DB play, how about CT fumbling before the pylon in the denver game and williamson dropping the long ball in that game?

I hate to state the obvious, but we went 0-4 in games that Jackson did not start so thre must be more problems than just him.

He has the work ethic, and tools to be great, he works for it, he shows mental toughness (which is essential for a QB), mobility, arm strength, and this year has a legitimate Long ball threat, which by the way sounds like they are connecting on a ton of long balls in camp.
The bad decisions will go away with experience and practice, and if not look at someone who has made bad decisions and dont turn out that bad... see below

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akili_Smith

heres some quotes from there

Smith joined other highly drafted Bengals players such as David Klingler, Ki-Jana Carter, and Peter Warrick who as a result of injury, bad work ethic

Smith missed large periods of 1999 pre-season training with the Bengals due to contract disputes; many pundits later speculated that his absence from this short training period hurt him immensely in the seasons to come

never established himself with the team

but again failed to mesh with the team.

Jackson is meshing with the team, has established himself as the starter, has good work ethic, and doesn't miss camps.
So go through your hatred folder and pull something else out that might be worthwhile to read.

So do the fans. I had another cheesdick jump in front of my car on the way home from work today trying to end his suffering after Favre applied for reinstatement.

I swerved & just nudged him hard enough to roll him into the ditch.

Ok, I do admit that Tarvaris is unlike Akili in that Tarvaris is committed to the team and works hard. I have no problem with T-Jack's work ethic or attitude. In fact I hope he does well and proves that I was wrong about his abilities.

BTW, Packers SUCK !!!

But i do have it on good authority that you traveled down to Brett's farm to console him after his devastating loss to the Giants in the NFC championship game.
