Who is the best linebacker to ever wear a Viking uniform?

I think in 10 years EJ might be the one but Scott Studwell gets my vote.

I only watched the Vikings from like 1987 on, so I would have to say my vote is for Ed McDaniel.

He was an overachiever and a great team player.

It's Siemon.

Tough one here. Hmmm... Roy Winston.. Matt Blair, Jeff Siemon, or Scott Studwell.... Now we have EJ, and Chad, and Ben Leber. All of these guys + I really liked Jack Del Rio for the short time he was a Viking. Honestly my favorite has to be EJ Henderson, as I see him really coming into his own, and soon will be another pro-bowl Viking.

Matt Blair was the best OLB. Studwell the best MLB. The biggest sleeper we ever drafted who would possibly been an HOF if not for a knee injury that ruined his career was Jesse Solomon.

Jeff Siemon used to be my favorite Viking but I do think Studwell was a bettle linebacker.

Scott Studwell
Jack Del Rio
Matt Blair
Fred McNeill
Wally Hilgenberg
Jeff Siemon

All of them were pretty darn good players.

I have to agree that Studwell was one of the best.
Although, I know they were only there for a short time, but I think Del Rio and Meriweather played very well too.
However, my favorite has to be Ed McDaniel.

I think Greenway might have a chance to have his name up there with the best of them when it is all said and done. In his first year playing he had 105 tackles (78 solo), 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions and a TD. Those are some really good numbers for a guy in his first real season. If he can stay healthy and continue to improve, I think he will be a hell of a linebacker.

The Vikings have had some great linebackers but I have to go with Scott Stud-well - he should be in the Hall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott Studwell 1977-1990
9th round draft pick

1,981 combined tackles

(average of 142 total tackles per year)

(Viking team record, in fact he has the most tackles by 1 player with 1 team in NFL history)

1,308 solo tackles (viking record)
(average of 94 solo tackles per year)

230 tackles in 1 season

24 tackles in 1 game

9 sacks
(1st few years in the league sacks were not an official stat he might have had more)

11 INT's

15 fumble recoveries

Lead the Viking's 8 times in tackles.

At least 5 season's with over 200 tackles (maybe more hard to find the stats)

His 1st 2 years he was a backup behind Jeff Seimon.

Only a 2 time probowler in 1987 - 88 but a big reason why he didn't make more probowls was Mike Singletary with the Bears who is in the Hall of Fame, so let's compare them.

Mike Singletary 1981 - 1992
2nd round draft pick

1,488 combined career tackles

(average of 124 total tackles per year)

885
solo career tackles

(average of 74 solo tackles per year)

19 sacks

7 INT's

12 fumble recoveries

Scott Studwell should be in the Hall of Fame and it's a disgrace he was never seriously concidered and a big part of that was Mike Singletary and the Bears defense was the media darlings of the 80's.
Singletary was getting all the probowl appearances and because Scott only got 2 probowls affected his chance to get to the Hall.

Again at least 5 times Scott was over 200 Tackles in a season he maybe had more.

I'm with Jargo on this.
Blair's the best.

Although Studwell, Hilgenberg and Siemon are also favorites of mine.
