View Full Version : Florida and Ohio State on course for potential NCAA Basketball Championship???

I was reading earlier that after Florida's loss this weekend, Ohio St could move into the top spot.
Either way, they're both top 5 teams.

Has the NCAA basketball championship ever been the same teams that played for the football championship???

Here's to OSU getting a little bit of revenge for the butt-whooping they took on the football field earlier this year.
Although, I think this time, Florida would be the favorite.
I know it's the matchup I'd like to see.
Depending on how the brackets line up, it may not even be possible for them to play in the championship, but if they both get #1 seeds, they could at least meet in final 4.

I don't care who makes the national championship as long as OSU beats sconnie this Sunday! PLEASE help me root for OSU!!

On a neautral court there are at least 5 teams better than OSU.
Depending on the matchups, they will have a very tough time getting to Atlanta.
When their guards aren't hitting a lot of shots, which happens quite often, they are not among the elite teams in the country.
If they do meet up with Florida, I can't see the Gators losing.
Come tourny time, the only teams I see matching up with Florida are UNC, Kansas, and maybe aTm and Wisky.
There are other teams that can possibly win the title but in terms of matchups, very few stand up with Florida.

Doesn't seem too far-fetched now, huh?

Anything can happen.
I just know you OSU fans who ripped me a few months ago, want revenge.

I don't think it will be happening though but you can dream until Monday night.

Alright it happened!
Too bad Florida looks unstoppable.
But, I think OSU was heavy favorites in the football game.
The tables are turned.
I'll be rooting for the Buckeyes the whole time, but I'm not too confident going into this one.
But, I have to talk trash anyway.

Alright Purple Gator, Noah, Brewer, and Horford and company are going down!
No predictions, this time.
GO BUCKEYES!!!!
Revenge will be sweet!!!

No predictions?
Well I have been pretty accurate so far.

Florida is one of those teams that do just enough to win.

Like all great teams the majority goes against them but the dominant team usually wins.

To compare what Florida did against OSU in football and saying the tables are turned, doesn't really work.
OSU wasn't returning champions.
It was the media spin saying OSU was great.
Florida basketball already has a championship.
They are going for a repeat.

[/quote] OSU was heavy favorites in the football game.

I was referring to the fact that OSU was favored in the football game, Florida will be favored in the basketball game.
Regardless of whether anyone is playing to defend their national championship, the tables are turned, becaus now roles are reversed.

Florida has plenty of reason to be favored, mainly because they are returning national champions, but also because they've had a very good year this season. OSU had plenty of reason to be favored in the football game considering they were the only undefeated team.
So, yes it is a very similar situation, with the schools each just playing a different role this time.

I think Ohio St's only slight advantage is in the backcourt, it's tough to match OSU's guard play.
However, it's near impossible to match Florida's frontcourt.
Horford's a beast, Noah (as much as I can't stand him) is a great player, Brewer's tough, in fact the entire starting 5 is solid.
If both teams play the best game they're capable of playing Florida will win.
As a Buckeye fan, I can just hope the Buckeyes play their best game and Florida doesn't.
I suspect Florida will be able to get Oden into foul trouble early, which means OSU will have to hope they can force turnovers and get out on the break.
Otherwise, Florida will take it.

So, as you can see I'm confident predicting a Buckeye victory, 76-73.

You would trade a basketball championship for a football one. This would be good for OSU but not good enough.
Basketball will always be second to football.

Noah didn't have a great game but thats the great thing about Florida.

He doesn't have too.

I admit Oden did great tonight but one guy cannot carry a team forever.

I think Oden should go back to Ohio State next year.

noah is a glorified, more athletic mark madsen..florida is so deep and talented that they could win it all without him, no problem..noah is probably 4th or 5th as far as talent goes with that team..lotsa hustle, but cant do anything particularly well as far as basketball skills go..in the NBA he will be a homeless man's anderson varejao, except significantly weaker and less skilled

brewer will be a good scorer/man on man defender off the bench in the pros, and horford should develop into a decent PF if he works on his post game

as for oden, hes ready for the big time..he cant stay and play at ohio state where their coach spent all season long using him the wrong way..i think him playing in college is hindering his development, because he has the skill set right now to be significantly better with a coach that can use him properly

PurpleGator
04-03-2007, 12:22 AM
I don't think he is ready for the NBA but you never know.

It is so hard to tell how college players will fit in the NBA.

I just know he needs to run a little more.
He seems to get worn down pretty quick.

he definitely does need to get into better shape, like you said..he missed alot of time before the season started (and even some of the season), but theres really no excuse for still being outta shape by the time the championship game comes around..i think skill wise, hes more than ready

i think durant is better than oden now, and will also be in the pros..i think they should and will both come out this season..they are both cant miss prospects, but durant is going to be the sickest thing to come out of college since jordan

Congrats, once again, Purple Gator, your Florida Gators knocked the crap out of my Buckeyes.

At least last night the Buckeyes showed they had a lot of heart, and despite the fact that they were being outplayed on both ends of the floor, they managed to keep themselves in the game until there were about 2 mins left.
I didn't realize how good Florida's perimeter shooting was.
Everytime something went right for OSU and they were one score away from making it close, Brewer or Humphrey knocked down a 3.

Unlike the football game, where OSU just seemed to give up and stop fighting once they were down a couple scores, the basketball team put up a much better fight, and we're even more overmatched than the football team was.

It's disappointing to watch your team lose (we all know how that feels), but I'm proud they put up the fight they did.

As far as Oden, I'd like to see him come back for a year, and if OSU were to keep their core intact for next year, I could see them in the final 4 again.
But, I can't blame the guy if he goes pro.
He's basically guaranteed to be a top 5 pick.
Durant is definitely better than Oden right now, but I think Oden will continue to get better whether he stays a year in college or goes pro.

Hey PurpleGator, what are some of your other favorite teams?
Or other sports?
I'm and Indians and Cards (unfortunately on a casual level, but the first baseball team I played for was the Cardinals, and I've had a hat for several years, but I did celebrate their WS win last year a little bit, mainly because I work with a Tigers fan) fan in baseball.
Mavericks and Cavs in basketball.
I guess it doesn't matter, you're a Vikings fan, that's what's important.
I just feel like all your teams keep beating mine.

Not a big soccer fan, although for about a month after college, I worked for Columbus Crew.
Spurs used to own the Mavericks, until last year.
I think the Mavs will probably take it all this year.
Yanks used to own the Indians, kinda still do, but oh well.
The Indians/Twins rivalry is a pretty fair one, at this point both are contenders.=

Well, enjoy your victory and $20 cigar.

You should of seen all the people at work today.
Talk about tired.
Some didn't even make it in until late.
Everybody was happy but looked like they were partying all night.

I really wanted the Gators to win so bad.
There is a small part of me that feels for OSU.
Thats just a sportsmanship thing though.
Those OSU players tried hard last night but when you have a team like Florida with that much talent.
Its hard to come back.

I don't think we will see a repeat from the Gator football team though.
It will be great to see Tebow back there.

There is some sort of order.
