Sid Hartman: Vikings will be active in going after players

Rick Spielman, the new Vikings vice president of player personnel, said the signing of free-agent defensive back Dwight Smith is an example of many moves the team might make to improve the team as the season develops.

"We were very aggressive to sign that player and put him in the mix with everybody else we have, and we'll continue to do that," Spielman said. "Every day we're having meetings with our pro department. We've already identified probably 350 names that we're going to be evaluating during the preseason and see if those names start coming off the wires or are guys that could be possibly available in a trade. You look at all avenues to get players in, and we're going to be very aggressive doing that."

Spielman, who was hired in May following the NFL draft, said he believes the Vikings signed some good players, but that getting personnel is a continuous process.

"We still are going to be active even going into camp, and once we get into camp, there will be some activity going on," he said.

Spielman said he believes coach Brad Childress has the team going in the right direction to be a winner.

After joining the organization, Spielman concluded that there were a lot of good athletes taking part in the minicamps, but that doesn't tell much until they put pads on.

No doubt Zygi and Mark Wilf, owners of the team, will spend the money to make this team a winner. The signing of Smith was a good example of what will happen in the future if the right player is available that will make the Vikings better.

It's nice to see they're always looking. I would assume that this is true for every team, although it wasn't true during the Redneck/Tice era.
