Vikings sign Andersen

Just when the Vikings' kicking situation appeared to settle down, head coach Mike Tice made another startling move.

The Vikings signed veteran kicker Morten Andersen to contract Wednesday morning, just eight days after the team inked Brett Conway to a two-year deal.

Andersen, the second-leading scorer in NFL history, was released by Kansas City last week after losing a training-camp battle to former CFL star Lawrence Tynes.

The 22-year veteran spent the past two seasons with the Chiefs. He converted 16 of 20 field-goal attempts last season, but missed his only try from beyond 50 yards.

Andersen, 44, didn't handle kickoffs regularly in 2003, but Tice said Andersen will handle kickoffs and placekicking duties in Sunday's regular season opener against Dallas.

Travis Dorsch, signed to the practice squad Wednesday, could be added to the active roster to handle kickoffs later this season, according to Tice.

"At some point, we'll take the kickoffs away from Morten and give them to Travis," Tice said.

Interesting move.

As long as he doesn't miss any of our extra points I'll be fine.

Funny to see a Bears fan laughing at us over the 1998 season.

Sept 27, 1998 Minnesota 31 Chicago 28
Dec 6, 1998 Minnesota 48 Chicago 22

The NFC championship sucked but at least the Vikings were playing in it, not watching it like the Bears.

Not liking this move, I think I would have given Conway a week to try and find out if he could cut it!!

Morten is not going to be able to kick-off deep and Conway's 3 & 4 th kickoff's last week were around the 3 yard line.

He might have been able to kick over 40 yards cause I do not think Morten can anymore!

Go away Lovie, we are trying to have intelligent conversation and you do not qualify!

Del Rio

Man your one line zingers are lacking quality. I mean there are a few ways to talk smack ok.........

1 way is to bring up stats and try and justify your opinion. This method ends up pissing people off because what it all boils down to is an opinion and records. Obviously you can't perform this type of smack talk because the bears have no stats worth mentioning. Except maybe that one time they tried to fit the whole starting line-up, up the fridges ass.

So if you want to piss people off try bringing up stats. Maybe talk about Warren Moon, or perhaps try and talk about how Moss doesn't run block or something.

Type 2: Comebacks and Zingers. This is difficult to do. You need to be accurate, intelligent and quick minded. Also try reading it through before you post it because most viking fans aren't fluent in retard.

Option three is to drink a tall glass of STFU.

Just use whatever works best for you.

The Vikes are saying that Andersen will handle the kickoff duties up until the bye week. During that time the ST coaches will work with Travis Dorsch and then bring him into the full roster.
Given the probs we had with kickoffs last year, then having more of the same for another couple of weeks is bearable. The main question against Morten is distance but he's solid on the shorter FG's - which has been a problem in recent times

Why cut Conway? Keep two kickers, not hard

SKOL
09-07-2004, 02:48 PM
When Gary Anderson used to kick off short the offenses never started past their 30. He used to pick an exact spot to place the ball, and everyone knew where to run. He never overkicked his coverage. Granted there's not a lot of touchbacks, but we won't have any long runbacks either.

whackthepack
09-07-2004, 03:00 PM
To have 2 kickers on the roster we have to cut somebody. If the game is on the line and we need a 47 yarder to win can Morten hit from that distance?

Big Daddy
09-07-2004, 03:06 PM
I just don't know. I think we will have the same problem we had last year only for a different reason. Last year we didn't attempt anything over 40 yards because Tice had no confidence in Elling this year it will be because Anderson can't kick it that far.

So when it is 4th and 8 and we are on the 25yd line what do we do.

1. Go for it and if we don't pick it up it gives the other team a big confidence boost. #-o

2. Punt the ball and maybe back them up 10 to 15yds. :pukeright:

Because the Viks will have to be inside the red zone before we are in field goal range. That sucks.

this is the weakest part of the team, I just hope we score a ton of tds and that way we don't have to worry about it.

couldn't agree more. It makes no sense to waste a roster spot on a KOS (kickoff specialist). Hopefully, Mort will be able to kick it past the 20 on kickoffs!

It would be nice to get a good young kicker for some long term stability for a change. Even if Andersen works out, for how long? Is our kicking situation going to be continuously in flux?

lol Cowboys fan my whole life. But I've followed the vikes for about 13 years as well because of various friends that played on the team. Now I live in Eden Prairie about a mile from Winter Park and do various levels of work for some of the guys, past and present. 8) I cheer them on unless they're playing against the 'boys.

I think Anderson is a good move. He doesn't panic and he is accurate. With the offense we have I suspect that we won't be trying too many FG's over 40 yrds. With our WR's if we get stopped most of the time it will be in the red zone. :)

Remember that morten anderson has been kicking outside the last few years, so he might have a little more leg left than we know, for in the dome. It will be nice having a kicker you don't need to worry about missing from inside 40, or on extra points. I wasn't 100% confident with conway from anywhere. His big leg was nice, but it is worthless if he isn't very accurate, and conway hasn't been the most accurate kicker so far i his career.

I have to say I'm generally in favor of this move. While Andersen may not have much leg left, he is historically a very accurate (perhaps the most accurate in NFL history) kicker. Conway had a better leg, but his inconsistency (21-28 lifetime, 6-9 last season between the 30-39) had me worried a little. At least I feel like I can count on Andersen to hit everything from 40 and in. If Travis Dorsch will be brought onto the roster to kick off after the bye week (as I have read somewhere), perhaps Dorsch will work on being our "long-range" kicker, if we should ever need to pull a 50+ yarder to win a game.

The only real downside to this acquisition is that, at only 88 pts. behind Gary Anderson in the race as all-time leading NFL scorer, Andersen will almost certainly pass Gary Anderson for that honor this season. I really liked Gary Anderson and wish he would have been able to keep the record he set as a Viking.

whackthepack
09-07-2004, 05:12 PM
Dorsch is actually a punter that they want to train to do kick-off, he might be our long term punter.

You are correct, Dorsch both punted and placekicked at Purdue. The Vikings had wanted to draft him a few years back, but the Bengals beat them to it. Dorsch has yet to produce in the NFL, though. Hopefully, it's the same deal with most punters and kickers around the NFL where they have to get cut by a few teams before they hit their stride.

It really doesn't matter that Morten kicked us out of the playoffs, that's the past. What matters is that he is a Viking now, and he will give us a little more stability in the field goal catagory.

I saw in one article that andersen was brought in because he hit 12 field goals from various places around the field and werent just 30 yarders. He did alright with kickoffs but thats the reason conway got released so early. That and his injury problem.

Hard to imagine our kicker making 12 consecutive field goals.
