Vikings | Cap space remains; no signings on the horizon
Wed, 31 May 2006 21:13:47 -0700

Sid Hartman, of the Star Tribune, reports the Minnesota Vikings currently are $12 million under the salary cap, with about $2 million needed to sign draft choices, but apparently there aren't any plans to sign more players.

That's good news. Gives us some wiggle room when cuts are made (today, I think) but also puts us in good position for next off-season.

Which we will need, since we'll be drafting 32nd!

I like that...it means we are in good shape for next offseason already.

Nice to have some coinage just in case the injury bug hits before the trade deadline and some deals have to be made.

There may not be any plans to sign any more players but it sure gives us options if the right player gets cut due to other teams mismangement of their cap space.

Am I wrong in thinking that this has little or no effect on next year? Dont salaries get bigger twords the end of contracts which mayor may not happen next year?

I'm assuming it's as of this minute. Sure, there will be increases in many of the contracts at the end of the year, contract expiring, etc. Poison Pill should have that under control, who knows what the real number is based on the future.

In 2007 the Vikings will have to deal witht the following FAs (according to KFFL stats):

Pos Player Name FA Status Previous Team Current Team
RB Adimchinobe Echemandu RFA Minnesota Vikings
WR Aaron Hosack RFA Minnesota Vikings
WR Billy McMullen UFA Minnesota Vikings
WR Travis Taylor UFA Minnesota Vikings
TE Jeff Dugan RFA Minnesota Vikings
OG Jason Whittle UFA Minnesota Vikings
OT Adam Goldberg RFA Minnesota Vikings
OT Cullen Loeffler RFA Minnesota Vikings
C Anthony Herrera RFA Minnesota Vikings
DL Spencer Johnson RFA Minnesota Vikings
DL Darrion Scott RFA Minnesota Vikings

LB E.J. Henderson UFA Minnesota Vikings

Good info, but isn't McKinnie a FA next year?

I think he is, and he's going to want a big payday...especially after seeing what Hutch received. He'd better pick up his level of play this year and earn it, or we will likely be in the market for a new LT.

According to Prophets last post McKinney's contract year isn't till 2008

Fox Sports reports: News: T Bryant McKinnie's rookie contract expires after the 2006 season.
Impact: If "Mount McKinnie" isn't extended by the Vikes, he'll enter an impressive market for left tackles next year. Bengals T Levi Jones, Jeff Backus of the Lions, and the Bills' Mike Gandy are also due to become free agents. (Sun. May 21, 2006)

LAYING IT ON THE LINE
Having poured $49 million into its offensive line, the Minnesota Vikings are prepared to spend some more.

Vikings left tackle Bryant McKinnie is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season and some NFL executives believe Steve Hutchinson's new $49 million contract with Minnesota could influence those negotiations.

For starters, Hutchinson's contract contains a clause -- the "poison pill" that prevented Seattle from matching the offer sheet -- that mandates he be the highest-paid offensive lineman on his team this season or his contract must be fully guaranteed.

This means that if the Vikings were to negotiate a contract extension with McKinnie this season, it could not pay him more than $7 million per year, or they would have to guarantee Hutchinson's contract in full.

But after the Vikings play their last game this season, there would be no restrictions on what they could pay McKinnie, a 26-year-old ascending offensive tackle whose biggest asset is his pass-protection skills.

The Vikings have been fully aware of McKinnie's contract status, but it doesn't change the fact that, at this time next year, the team could be pouring a ton of money into the left side of its offensive line.

This year, Hutchinson cashed in. Sometime in the next year, McKinnie will.

Let's just see what McKinnie does this season, and then at the end of the year, they can make the decision. It sounds like there will be some other options, if they're unable to keep McKinnie.
