i was talking to my brother and we decided the the great "tampa 2" was missnamed. i was only a teenager when dungy was in minn. but i remember that they played alot of cover 2. and the defense was awesome till he left. so we believe it is unfair for everyone to call it the tampa 2 when it started in minn. and i just can't see myself calling it the tampa 2 all next season. i know it will take a little longer to say and type minnesota 2 but i think it is justifiable to change it back to it's rightful name

Yeah that is a good point you make. It should be Minnesota 2 but I just call it cover 2.

I have heard it called the Tomlin 2 as his will be a variation.

To call it cover 2 would sell it slightly short I feel.

Same holds true for the WCO. It originally began in Minnesota.

Until the Vikings do something with the D it will never be called the minnesota 2, except in the land of purple shades. The Bucs had a top-tier defense for years so that is how they robbed the name. I'm betting that a new names will transpire during the next 5 yrs based on the superfluous play of the Vikings squad .

So thanks to Minnesota playing more than is required (http://www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/chref/chref.py/main?query=superfluous&title=21st&sourceid=Mozilla-search) play on the field, the Tampa 2 will change it's name? Surely playing more than is required is what Erasmus James did when he got called for unecessary roughness last year.. Sorry mate, I read that and had to think about what you meant there for a while!

Back on subject tho: I've always called it the Cover 2. That's the name of the coverage. Tampa weren't the first to use it, and now that Indianapolis have been so successful using it these past few years, is it going to be called the Indy 2 from now on? Answer: NO. So forget which team ESPN is kneeling down in front of and blowing this season, or next season.. It doesn't particularly matter.

Then again, I'm probably one of the only people who thinks it's a contradiction for teams like the Eagles, the Packers and the Vikings to run a West Coast Offence.

  There is no argument that there is a proper name for the defense that isn't associated with a given team. I'm just hoping that the Vikings will surpass expectations with their defensive unit and a new name will emerge, similar to the purple-people-eaters of days gone by.

I thought that particular variant of defense had more to do with Monte Kiffin (the defensive coordinator of the Buccaneers), than it did with Dungy.

Dungy developed the Tampa 2.

It is not the same as he played here in Minnesota. It is a variation that requires even more quality play from the Linebackers.

Dungy is a good coach and that is why. He coaches to his players strengths. He has his convictions, but he is willing to alter them to the extreeme or to the safe side of the line to match his players and to get all he can from them.

He went to Tampa and had fast young talanted LB's so he asked more out of them then ever before. Tampa 2 was born.

I can almost hear James Earl Jones reading this post with some clips showing the progression of the Tampa2 being born. Almost brought a tear to my eye.

No worries mate.. To be honest, while I'll never call a formation or coverage by a team name, I'd love to see the Vikings D become so dominant that they force the Cover 2 to become synonymous with them. Much like whedefensive lines across the States are compared to the "Purple People Eaters" of the 70's and EVERYONE knows what they mean.

That is so bad.. It's good. That's so oxymoronic.. It's brilliant! Now I know I just said I'd never call a coverage or formation by a team moniker, I LOVE that name!

Side note: V2 was also the name of one of my favourite alco-pops. Shame it was rescinded just as I became of legal age!

Cover 2.. If they start playing like a top defense, it will then be known as the Tomlin 2..

Not a fan of cover 2.

I hope they can pull it off.

Keeping the play in front of us will mean that we will get "chipped" at quite a bit. We will need a (way better than last year) pass rush and lb's who can cover!

The problem with calling it a cover two is that the system (if it is based on Tampa-2) ismore like a cover three. It does require more from the linebackers and puts a lot on the MLB.......which scares me a bit!!!

I would rather the defense becomes so dominate that it takes on a name of its own.

Not a cover 2 or tampa 2, but one like the great defenses of the past did. You know like the Purple people eaters, the steel curtain, or the doomsday D.
