THIS BUD'S FOR YOU

Coming to a TV set near you will be a commercial pushing the Vikings' bid for a new stadium. Former Vikings coach Bud Grant is the one doing the pushing.

The commercial opens with footage of Grant from his days as a coach and a voiceover commentary that says, "Bud Grant talks about the Northern Lights Sports Retail and Entertainment Center."

Then we see present-day Bud standing outside the Vikings' Winter Park facility.

Here's what Bud has to say in the commercial:

"The Northern Lights Center is good for Minnesota.

It's an opportunity to build on our great football tradition and move it into the future. And it's a chance to bring $1 billion in private investment into our state. Join me and many others who are working to make Northern Lights a reality. Thank you."

The commercial will begin running today, according to team executive Lester Bagley

Vikings draw on Bud Grant, Wilf for new stadium blitz

Last update: May 01, 2006 – 10:56 PM

The Minnesota Vikings will bring Hall of Fame coach Bud Grant out of retirement once again to lead a media blitz that begins tonight as the team tries to launch another scoring drive in its quest for a new stadium in Blaine.
The TV, radio and print ads are part of a stadium push that shifted into high gear at the end of April. Last week, team owner Zygi Wilf appeared before the Minnesota Senate Taxes Committee to tout the proposed $675 million stadium in Anoka County.

On Monday, Wilf campaigned in Willmar for the stadium as Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson, DFL-Willmar, again said that he hoped for a full Senate vote this week on separate stadium plans for the Vikings, Twins and University of Minnesota.

The Vikings stadium is expected to be taken up Wednesday at a House Governmental Operations and Veteran Affairs Committee hearing. Wilf may testify at the meeting, a Vikings official said.

Wilf has met with groups in Duluth, St. Cloud, Rochester, Mankato, Chisholm and Willmar to give his "state of the Vikings report," said Lester Bagley, Vikings vice president of public affairs.

While having a multi-millionaire team owner barnstorm the state and appear in person at the State Capitol might seem unusual, Wilf is seen as "our best asset," said Bagley, "the best person to share this vision of tremendous economic development for the entire state of Minnesota."

Not a chance! There will be something named after him but the naming rights to the stadium will go to some large corporation.

Finally, stop asking the people to get behind it, tell them to get behind it.

Bud may be asking in the commercial, but the advertising company that Wilf hired is not asking anymore. Bud in the commercial is a form of telling people. It is an offer you can't refuse.

$1 Billion, wow!!

Right.. I can see them naming the practice facility after Bud Grant, but the stadium name will go to the highest bidder.

This is good news, anything to get more support for the stadium is great. Especially whens its a MN icon people should really get behind this.
