Ok, since this thread is about the helmet I hope this is the last uniform thread we get. We may have to make a new forum just for uniform talk.

I think the little bit of altering that they did do to the helmets made it stand out much better as a horn. They did a very good job overall with the new uniforms. I can't wait to see them on the field.

They could've created a silouette of the Viking Head and been on par of ugliness with Detroit...

Agreed, i think they did a great job, the helmet is still traditional, but modernized, excellent job boys(and girls).

Just got back from MoA after purchasing my new jersey. At the Vikes store, they had both mini-helmets and full-size (but not real - although they were $299.99!!!!) ones.

Two things:
1. The "3d-ification" of the horns kinda looks dumb up close. I will reserve judgement on that until I see them in action.

2. The paint has gotten sparkly. That could just be a part of these types and not part of the real deal.

What exactly did they do differently with the helmets? Maybe it's my poor attention to detail, but I don't notice anything different about them.

The sparkles are actually shredded up particles of razor sharp glass.

Our team is outfitted with protectibve contacts.

The theory is the glass will get into our opponents eyes rendering them blind.

Don't tell anyone though.

ITs very VERY subtle, but if you look at the new one compared to the old one you can tell it does in fact stand out a little more.

I think it looks exactly the same. Oh well, maybe I need glasses. I once hurt my eye in a pickup football game in college and had to get it drilled into, had to wear an eye patch for a week, thought I was going to go blind until they drilled to let the blood out, but maybe that's finally catching up with me.

BTW, I think they did a good job on the jerseys. I'm anxious to see the white jersey/purple pants combo. I think that's pretty sweet. Maybe an all purple one or two games this season would be good too.

That looks waaaaaaaaaaay to ugly to have ever been considered bye the Vikings. Where did you get that pic? The new Helmets look great, or I should say the new "Horn" looks great.

Anybody else find it odd that the REAL Vikings did not have horns on their helmets?

Actually, there have been a few horned helmets from 850 - 1000 C.E. that have been discovered very recently in Denmark, the Daneland, and parts of Scandinavia. A little something I uncovered while writing a thesis on causes of the decline of the Viking Age. A Danish museum has one on display, can't remember the name though; apparently the thing is displayed behind glass without too much fanfare. However, it should be noted that these horned helmets appear to have been ceremonial in nature, and were probably never used in any battle. The horned helmet was most likely worn by a priest in some sort of pagan rite, possibly a pre-journey blessing or something along those lines.

And probably worn by somebody named Svornthornkellerinin Blargeltharkellhadradilagarssen.

Still a little bitter about the sourcing for that damned thesis.

I'll take your word for it, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding and to date I haven't seen an authentic Viking head piece with horns on them. Please feel free to post your pics from reliable sources!

Regarding the usage of Horned Helmets during religious ceremonies:

From Straight Dope (For authoritative sourcing, see footnotes) (http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mhornedhelmet.html)

As I said before, there is absolutely NO evidence that Viking warriors (as opposed to Norse priests) wore horned helmets at all, let alone in battle. However, there is plenty of evidence (including archaelogical finds) for horned helmets used for religious ceremonies dating as far back as the Nordic Bronze Age, around 2000 B.C.E. As the above research points out, a horn on a battle helmet would make for an awfully good handle for enemies seeking to remove one's head.

The popular myth regarding horned battle helmets was created largely through Wagner's operas, in which the Nordic/Aryan Hero figure would frequently don horned- or winged-helmets. On a disgusting note, Adolf Hitler was a huge fan of Wagner while growing up, and incorporated the dramatic imagery and choreography into his speeches and Nazi ceremonies as part of his ideological co-opting Norse heritage and mythology to include Germanic ethnic lines into a twisted "Aryan" super race, which by his own sick definition excluded himself.

Are the facemasks on the new helmet black now? It sure looks like it from this picture from the vikings.com store. Maybe it's just the picture. Can someone who has seen one in person please fill me in?

On the full size replica I bought & on the authentic I saw at the MOA ($300) they are purple.

For some reason when you take a pic of the helmet or jersey, they appear blueish, but I can assure you they are purple.

The metallic helmet & horns you saw were the real deal. The ones for $299.99 were the authentic "on field" helmets.

The replica full size helmets were $119.99.

I saw them both , but opted to by the replica full size.

OK, to complain for the sake of complaining, I think the thick black outline of the horn makes it look a bit too cartoon-ish.
