According to a post on the Viking Update Message Board, ESPN Classic will be showing the season highlight films for the four Vikings Super Bowl teams this coming Saturday starting at 11 AM (not sure if that is Central or Eastern time). The four half-hour shows will be shown back to back.

The seasons covered are 1969, 1973, 1974, and 1976. Young Viking fans on this board can get to see such storied Viking greats like the Purple People Eaters (Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall and Gary Larsen, later replaced by Doug Sutherland), Joe Kapp, Fran Tarkenton, Chuck Foreman, Bobby Bryant, Dave Osborn, Bill Brown, Gene Washington and Paul Krause, and the great Bud Grant. I have these four highlight videos on tape as an NFL Films issue called "The Purple Power Years". All the home action takes place at Metropolitan Stadium (The Met), where the Vikings used to do battle on the frozen tundra. There is plenty of great footage of the Vikings playing in the snow, rain, mud, and frigid cold.

If you only get to watch one video, watch the highlights of the 1969 Vikings. Despite losing the Super Bowl to the Chiefs that year, they were probably one of the best football TEAMS of all time. Watch Joe Kapp turn down an award as "Vikings MVP" by telling the gathered audience that "there is no most valuable Viking. There are only 40 most valuable Vikings. 40 for 60."

I got to see the first 3 episodes but missed the last one. I was glad to see ESPN finally show some Vikings history. They deserve it.

Thanks PurplePat!!!!!!!!!!! I love watching them when they are on! I'm a little older, probably like you, and I remember those great teams...

As far as the best Vikes team ever, I'd have to say the 1975 team that lost to Dallas in the playoffs...
