Who would you put on the all time Vikings team? (An atleast 22 man team comprised of the greatest players to play for the vikings)

I'm doing this because one
1)I've got alot of time on my hands and want to make this team on Madden 06
2)It will broaden my knowledge of great Vikings players

Include name and position (I know sites where I can get any other info)

if you can't think of people for every position--np

I really cringe with these type of threads, but I will play:

QB: Fran
RB: Chuck Foreman, Robert Smith
WR: Cris Carter, Randy Moss
TE: Steve Jordan
G: Randall McDaniel, Todd Kalis
T: Korey Stringer, Ron Yary
C: Mike Tiglehoff

DE: Jim Marshall, Carl Ellar
DT: John Randle, Alan Page
LB: Scott Studwell, Matt Blair, Jack Del Rio
DB: Paul Krause, Joey Browner, Bobby Bryant, Ed Sharockman

K: Fred Cox

I like this team - although I have a few minor quibbles:

1. You've got 2 tailbacks. I think you need a fullback to run the classic I-formation. In that case, I'll pick JimmyK.

2. The Korey Stringer pick is emotion. Tim Irwin did it as good for longer.

3. I'm such a huge fan of Antoine Winfield (in particular his tackling ability) that I'm inclined to put him on here, even if it's only after 2 years.

4. At kicker - I'm not sure if Freddie Cox is a better choice than say Fuad Reveiz or Jan Stenerud....tough debate.

5. You don't have a punter! My pick is Mitch Berger.

Pretty good list here. I'd probably stick Ed White in there at G instead of Todd Kalis

Are you kidding me? This is why I hate threads like this. Jan Stenerud? He played for us for 2 years. Cox was the man from 63-77.

I know I have 2 RB's, I chose it that way because the accomplishments of the RB's are far greater than that of the FB's.

Stringer was good and he was my pick not out of emotion. He was well on his way to be a star.

Winfield could go in there, but but Bryant and Sharockman were nails.

And yes, I did not put a Punter in there. He only asked for atleast 22 players and I gave him Cox as a bonus.

Lets see the rest of your list?

Yeah, that was a tough one. I did not see too many standouts in the Guard spot. I always liked Kalis.

White was a Guard, like wes stated above.

Squeeze in Millard? Where? Bump off Page who is a HOF'r and one of the best ever, or Randle who had more sacks in the 90's than anybody else?

I mean, Keith was good...but it was not for a very long time for us.

The major downside to your posts are that you lose credibility BIG TIME when it comes to any meaningful football threads. People tend to remember posts such as this and are probably going to ignore any future insight you may have.

My team is very similar to Ultra's

I might change the TE to Stu Voight. And I think that maybe Millard at DT for the simple reason that even though Randle was an animal he was a bit undersized and could be run against whereas Millard was stout in the middle. He didn't put up the sack numbers that Randle did but I want a DT that can stuff the run, let the DEs get the sacks.

I like your LBs but maybe an honarable mention should go to Wally Hilgenberg. He was slow but he was always around the ball and wasn't afraid to stick his nose in the mix.

I don't know Ed Sharokman he may be before my time but Nate Wright gets a bad rap because of the Hail mary pass against Dallas. So Since I do not know Ed Sharokman I will have place Nate Wright or Winfiled in the mix.

I didn't start watching the vikings till the mid to late 80's with my stepdad. I know I'm not oldschool enough to try and put together an all-time list so I don't really try. although I thinl robert smith deserves to be the #1 back. I think he is the all-time rushing leader and he retired very early. he was a the top of his game when he left and was a class act.

The Millard/Randle choice was hard. I had to go with Randle because he had a better career, where Millard had a better peak in his career.

Winfield may be in there if he plays for us for a few more years, too early to tell. Sharockman was good, no doubt.

Let me say I've been a Vikings fan since 1969, so I've seen all the great ones play my whole life.

You didn't mention how many players you wanted at each position. Got to have at least one backup QB, right?

In some cases, there are multiple deserving players so I may list way too many. I'll try to list the "starters" first.

QB Fran Tarkenton
QB Daunte Culpepper
QB Tommy Kramer

I'd give honorable mention for one outstanding season each to Randall Cunningham for in 1998, and to Joe Kapp for 1969.

RB Robert Smith
RB Chuck Foreman
FB Bill Brown

WR Cris Carter
WR Randy Moss
WR Anthony Carter
WR John Gilliam
WR Sammy White
WR Ahmad Rashad

TE Steve Jordan
TE Stu Voigt

C Mick Tinglehoff
C Matt Birk

G Ed White
G Randall McDaniel
G Milt Sunde

T Ron Yary
T Gary Zimmerman
T Grady Alderman
T Tim Irwin
T Korey Stringer

DE Carl Eller
DE Jim Marshall
DE Chris Doleman
DE Doug Martin

DT Alan Page
DT Keith Millard
DT John Randle
DT Gary Larsen

Honorable Mention to Henry Thomas

MLB Jeff Siemon
MLB Scott Studwell
MLB Jack Del Rio

OLB Roy Winston
OLB Wally Hilgenberg
OLB Matt Blair
OLB Fred McNeill

Honorable Mention here to Ed McDaniel, who I believe played both OLB and MLB at different points in his career.

CB Carl Lee
CB Bobby Bryant
CB Nate Wright

S Paul Krause
S Joey Browner
S Robert Griffith

P Mitch Berger

K Gary Anderson
K Fuad Reveiz
K Fred Cox

Personal Note: Fred played in a different day and age. He's the Vikings all time leading scorer, but he couldn't carry Anderson or Reveiz' jock. Despite "The Miss", Anderson is perhaps the greatest PK in NFL history.

The only year Gene Washington played with John Gilliam was 1972. Washington only had 18 catches that season (his last with the Vikings), and had only 12 catches the previous year. Prior to that, he had displayed Moss-like talents. It was a different era, but as much as Washington wowed the league in 1969, in his other five Vikings seasons he only mustered a total of 133 catches and 14 TDs...an average of about 27 catches and 3 TDs per season.

Nice list! Thats what I am talking about!

For me, Ed McDaniel was very hard not to put in there. Very!

I only agree with Cox...he is our lifetime leading scorer. But at least you have Fuad.

I'd put in Stu Voight or Joe Senser over Jordan for TE.

Looks good otherwise.....

No way, I think Jordan was a better TE than Stu or Joe because he was a much beter receiving TE and was an intricate part of the offense in the 80s.

This post made me think back to watching Jesse Solomon play. He came in either undrafted or a very low pick and became an excellent LB until he tore his knee up. Not sure he can make the list but should be an honorable mention.

i dont know how anybody can know for sure who the VERY best, WITHOUT QUESTION when you have to remember all the guys back to the sixties. and there some really good guys who havent been playing for us long but might be considered some of our best ever in a couple years and so the team would change. I know I couldn't choose just a couple guys to be on the All-Vikings team

Wow, I let it simmer overnight and it's filled with respones --thank's to everyone who posted.

And, BTW:

AWZeus, is that really who the nameless players on the team match up with statistically? Or did you just fill it in by opinion?

Opinion. But you should be able to figure it out based on the numbers. If you supply us the numbers, we can fill in the players. For example - I would guess the QBs are 10, 9 & 11.

The RBs are 44, 26, etc.

Ok, fair. I just cannot believe that Studwell did not make it.

Wasn't Krause a SS?

Carter should be in front of Moss. Other than that...good.

I don't think it's fair to blame Darren Nelson for his draft position. That's management's fault, not his. And he was a great back for the Vikes - his goal-line drop in the playoffs in 1987 notwithstanding.

It is hard to pick all time greats. How about the whole PPE teams from the 70's?
It is a team game. The Purple People Eaters were one of the best D-lines in NFL history even without any SB wins.
Too bad they went up against some of the best teams in NFL history as well. What if they went up against the Seahawks? How about the Broncos with Elway? And the Pats?
My favorite players were Cris Carter, Fran the Man, John Randle, Matt Blair, Studwell, Alan Page, Jim Marshall, Cris Doleman, Paul Krause, Bobby Bryant, Ahmad, Dave Osborne, Bill Brown, Steve Jordan to name a few. There are many, many more.
Not so fav Vikes. Darrin Nelson(sorry DNG), Underwood, Hershel,Dumbpepper, Alexander, Corey Fuller to name a few.
