Public figure finally acts like one as Childress surfaces

BY BOB SANSEVERE
Pioneer Press

Brad Childress was in St. Paul on Monday and wanted to let everyone know he knew something about the city. So, he mentioned a popular watering hole.

I was impressed, and not because Childress has heard of O'Gara's; what struck me is that he finally is stepping out in public.

Childress became the Vikings' coach in early January, and here it is late March and here he is, after all this time, speaking in public for the first time.

He actually said a few things worth hearing during Monday's talk to the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce. He admitted Terrell Owens' lousy behavior influenced his decision to trade Daunte Culpepper, and he said he could have become the Green Bay Packers' coach but preferred the Vikings.

His 23 minutes in front of the Chamber crowd were enlightening. For instance, I didn't know he once thought Mark Wilf was Zygi Wilf's son when, in fact, they're brothers.

Nor did I have a clue about how Childress might behave on the sideline until he said, "I don't know that I'll be like Bill Cowher, crying and slinging snot or anything like that."

I also learned Childress wants his quarterbacks to be "flat-line guys.... I don't think you make particularly good decisions when you're jumping up and down and screaming and frothing from the mouth."

And I found out colleague Tom Powers made an impression when he criticized Childress for avoiding the Twin Cities media. "Tell Tom I'm out of the bunker now," Childress said to the Chamber crowd and, later, to me.

Now that he's out, he needs to stay out.

Uhhhh no that is not what he said. (see thread title)

Evidently new Vikings coach Brad Childress hasn't been mincing words in meetings with his new players. "They look at me and there is just a little bit of, 'Who is this guy? What does he stand for?' " he said. "What I told them is, 'You didn't pick me, I picked you.' Because if I didn't take this job I was going down the road to take the job with the Green Bay Packers."

What he said was he chose to be here over taking the Packer job. This was his first choice.

Don't read into drivel like this too much. It doesn't matter. He is our Head Coach now and that is what matters in the longrun.

It doesn't say he wanted to coach there over us... it just says he could've if he wanted.

Packers | Childress was close to joining the Packers
Tue, 21 Mar 2006 07:06:15 -0800

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress told a Chamber of Commerce luncheon he was close to becoming the Green Bay Packers' head coach. However, after his first interview with the Vikings, he decided to take the Minnesota job.

Correcta mungo!

I posted the thread where he talks about it a little while ago.

You should edit your title!

Suggestion: Childress chose Vikings because Pack sucks!
