Vikings | Contract Update: James
Tue, 9 Aug 2005 21:30:43 -0700

According to the Associated Press, Minnesota Vikings rookie DE Erasmus James' contract is essentially a five-year deal worth $9.8 million including about $7.5 million in guaranteed money plus some back-loaded incentives that could raise the total value to $12.3 million.

Sorry if it has been posted already. I've seen plenty of "Erasmus signs!" threads, but none with specs. All around a pretty good deal for him I think. Wish it would have got done quicker though...

Yea, that's a pretty nice contract. It's a shame his season got delayed like it did for those numbers...

Sorry for my incompetence, but could someone who knows explain what guaranteed money means. Guaranteed as opposed to what? Thanks!

NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. If you sign a 2 year 2 million dollar deal with no bonus, and the team cuts you before you play, you get $0.

Alot of money in contrcts hinges on whether you get injured or not, whether you get cut or not, etc.

Gaurenteed money is cash they hand you over the counter that's yours no matter what.

guranteed as oppose to non guranteed. NFL contracts are non guranteed thats why they can cut you or restructer your deal if they feel like it. Thats the only **** up thing about the league....

Thanks a lot for your answers; makes sense now. Do other sports have guaranteed money, like baseball, basketball, and hockey?

I disagree. That's the one thing that makes this league as great as it is (well, that and the salary cap). Baseball, and Basketball both have guaranteed money, and in both leagues, you see players half-assing it, because they don't have to work hard to keep their jobs. I know it's harder on the players in the NFL, but when the minimum salary for a player coming out of college is already in 6 figures, it can't be that hard.

Hey reading the Blog I see Erasmus picked off a pass on the scrimmage line today - thrown by BJ. I don't knwo the details but that sounds good for his first practice!

yeah they work harder to play for the contract but I think it's wrong that a player can work his ass off and get a good contract then get injured and the team says "Hey, good luck with that situation but we don't want you anymore". Then your on your own, bad man...

Nice way to start off a delayed training camp - and show the team what you're getting paid for.
