I was disappointed to see Linehan go, but I'm really uncertain how I feel about Loney. He seems a giant question mark. His profile on vikings.com isn't reassuring either. He doesn't seem to have much NFL coaching experience, but maybe that's a non-issue. Still, I'm pessimistic about his ability to make the offense as productive as it was last year.

What do you folks think?

Can anyone talk me down from my pessimism?

can someone post a pic of him?

i wasn't real upset when linehan left...

linehan's idea of offense:

"what? we have running backs too?!!?"

"when all else fails, let's do a trick play."

"when I need to run the clock down, let's throw!!! that'll waste time."

"runningbacks: you're in...no you're in, no i mean, you're in... i can't decide."

i am not really disappointed at all.

I agree with all those except the run the clock down by throwing. He did throw in some cases but he really had no choice. It was pathetic to watch him hand the ball off to our backs to run the clock and all we'd do is go 3 and out, which gave the other team a chance to score.

He CAN'T be any worse than Linehan OR Billick (when he first started out with the Vikes)...most of you don't remember, but Billick sucked at first...I remember wanting to personally strangle him during his first years as the OC...give Loney a chance before you kick him to the curb.

Now you have to admit, when we ran, we ran! (about 30 times in a row!)

"when all else fails, let's do a trick play."

I thought that reverse pass with Moss was a great call!

"when I need to run the clock down, let's throw!!! that'll waste time."

You have to admit, Daunte put the ball up in the air for a long time!

Kidding aside, I agree PA. I just hope Loney doesn't have his head placed squarely in his keester!

i still cringe when i think of that call to let moss throw when we were driving the field. i can't remember what game that was.

still cringe when i think about that fake field goal play that cost us the game too. he really didn't impress me. we had easily one of the most potent offenses in the game with moss, and whenever we really needed to score, he couldn't figure out how.

in both the philly games, we went away from what really worked for the team--spreading the field. that was so iritating to see our boys get stalled doing mostly screen passes.

but that is just me. he can go screw up another offense. but really, could miami get any worse?

PA,
I think the Dolphins will actually be better. They couldnt have been much worse.
I think that Linneyhan was way too pass happy here.
Vikes were second in team avg. in yds per attempt in rushing. Why not exploit that? I know that Birk being out hurt that a little but still....

i think if looney commits to one back (bennett) and commits to mix the shite up a bit, 1/2 pass, 1/2 run...and has success with it, we will al be praising the rookie OC.

still does anyone have a pic of him?

i could use something to make jokes about.

I hope he runs the ball atleast 25-30 times a game. What PA said pretty much sums up Linehan. Let's hope Loney runs a balanced attack, not be too predictable, and use his RB's wisely. I don't know what to think of him. Besides, who can be a horrible O-coordinator with Culpepper behind center?

you can grab one here (http://www.vikings.com/coach_detail_objectname_steve_loney.html)

What worries me a bit is something he said in a recent VU article:

Offensive coordinator Steve Loney said the passing game won’t be complex. He prefers to do a limited number of things well rather than a lot of things not so well. “My background has been to take a few things that we do well and try to run them from a lot of different (formations and motion), Loney said.

simple...and perhaps predictable. I'm worried they guy may be too green. Lets hope he matures fast.

I dont think that Linehan had ANY NFL experience before coming here. At least Loney has some.

I think that Loney will be fine. With the personnel that we have it shouldnt be a problem. In terms of running the ball they hopefully will have more balance than last year but that doesnt mean 50/50. I really hope that they dont try to pound run after run to just to create balance. We have too good of a passing attack; we should utilize that first.

I don't think Tice has determined whose going to call the plays yet. Recall earlier there was some talk that Tice would call the plays, using the input of his coaches. This will be a big year for Tice, so I don't blame him for not trusting a new offensive coordinator.

I have no doubt the offense will be successful. With Tice and Loney both being offensive line coaches you know we'll run the ball well. Michael Bennett does a good job hanging onto the ball, and is primed for a big year, being in a contract year himself. As long as the offense is imaginative, throwing in some play action with long balls, and one flea flicker per game, we'll be fine.

I think Webby put it best a few months back, he said something like; "a monkey could call the plays for this offense and be successful".

If the defense can hold up its part of the bargain we're Super Bowl bound.

Here's another picture.

I don't think he's such a bad guy. He was offensive line coach in 2003, the Vikings ranked No. 1 in total offense and fourth in rushing in the NFL while three different running backs had 100-yard rushing days. In 2002, the Vikings led the NFL in rushing with a franchise record 2,507 yards, breaking a 27-year old mark. It was also Michael Bennett’s best year, as the running back had 1,296 yards. He's also written a book on offensive line coaching and is you are a long time U of Minnesota fan you hsve to remember in his second season at the University of Minnesota, the Gophers finished second in the Big Ten and 11th nationally in rushing.
I think it means we're gonna see a lot more running out of the Vikings with Steve Loney as the offensive coach just like Tice has promised us.
A throwback to the Big Ten of old -- "Three years and a cloud of dust..." but it's hard to get "dust" on artificial turf. LOL

My crystal ball says, by the 5th game of the season Tice is calling the shots to save his job. IMO
