View Full Version : Our deep RB pool...

It's no secret got some talented RB's and if we end up not trading any of them, then we've got a problem. Our desire to go with a feature back would mean we'll have 2 good RB's sitting on the bench.

After seeing Brian Westbrook eat us alive in the playoffs, I'm wondering why don't we use Bennett/Moore in the same way? We could line them up in 4 or 5 receiver sets, or use them for screen plays. They've got the speed to go deep and have decent hands, not to mention their great running skills. Smith could then concentrate on running the ball (that's assuming he wins the starting job!).

My point is, let's use what we have!

Westbrook is just a freak, he runs great routes which is something RB's arn't perfect at. Its hard to say who should be the feature back, i might be willing to give bennett another shot, but i think Onterrio may be the most durable and best runner. Mewelde is also very good but i worry about his toughness and durability. It should pan itself out but i would definitly like to see ONE guy that takes the 16 to 25 carries a game. I think Bennett can do it, he knows the offense, it may change some but he's familair with his surrounding, his pass catching and pass blocking have improved imensly. The only real knock on him is the concern about his natural running. If you look at bennetts injuries there more like freak accidents, aside from his sprained ankle his rookie season, the treadmill thing and helmet he took to the knee. Weather or not he can be the real deal is to be seen but he is the only guy on the team that has had a 1000 yard season on the ground.

Robert Smith also was a track guy who was injured a lot early in his career.

The Vikes need to trade one of the backs

I dont think they need to trade anyone but it might help the team more if they did trade one of them.

I remember last year when it was said we had to trade one of the three and then all got hurt and we found out who Mewelde is. I think that having all four does not hurt us that bad. I think Moe is basically moot with this group and should not see the field barring injuries. I think that it would not be bad to trade either Bennett or Smith, but it really depends on what we got in return.

I think Moe would be a good short yardage back.

with the draft as deep as it is at rb , high dollar free agents aren't getting much of a look . i say trade that cripple bennett for a 9th rounder!!!!!!!!!

we dont need to trade Bennett. I wouldnt trade him for a draft pick I want a player that can help out right away. althought I would like to see the vikings get Marion Barber.

bennett will never start or finish 16 games in a row . he's a pinyata (sp?)!!!

Bennett doesnt have to start games for us. Robert Smith was injured early in his career and turned into a good running back Bennett might not be able to go up the middle like Smith but he is still a decent back.

i personally have lost faith in bennett . i don't think he's durable enough. i think he thinks that also , i could see it in his scared running.

yeah I see what your saying. I think he will come around this year but he wont start I think Onterrio Smith will get the nod.

o smith or a healthy m&m looked good to me . start pickin up those blitzez m&m!!!!!!!

M & M needs to talk Moe on how to pick up Blitz and that. Smith is the best back we have Mr. Moore is right behind him. I think Bennett should be the third down back and Moe for getting the short yards.

Not sure how deep they really are.

O.Smith is one puff away from la la land.
Bennett is made out of balsa wood.
Mo isn't an everydown back.
MM................................................nothing wrong about MM.

Bennett runs like he is expecting to get hurt. I think he is damaged goods. Without getting all the carries maybe O.smith will start to drift feeling he isn't a big contributer to the team?

Just pick one of the ones we have and run them every down. We have a LOT of rb's but it is a fragile core.

i agree.. the only real tough one is Moe.. MM and Onterrio can get you some extra yards but they each have something wrong also.. MM id like to see him work out with Moe and work on picking up blitzes.. i think then he would start

He already is a good short yardage back.

what ever happened to the trade rumor that had Bennett and a # 2 going to AZ for Bolden?

We need to settle on 1 back and not running back by committee.

Our back situation is confusing....i loved bennett but like you guys said....its almost like hes scared to run the ball hard...I dont think he'll ever be the same....ya R-smith was injuried early in his career...but that was R-smith....thats him we have no idea what bennett will do....he could be the Ryan leaf of RB's.....who knows...i think we need to trade a back and draft one

I think we should keep all our RB's and go into more of a 2 back offense. We can run out of those sets, which is what all the teams are expecting us to do, but we can also run alot of screens and short flare passes in the flats from those sets also. Much like the old days with Sir Francis at QB!! Bennet, Smith, and Moore can all catch, and are all very hard to bring down in the open field, so the key for us will be to spring them open on the outside as much as we can. Defenses will have to start bringing their corners up to support the line, and when they do, we can go verticale to the WR's.

If they decide to be a run 1st pass later team that would be the common sense thing to do. But I have a feeling they will still like to utilize the pass as much as they have in the past. That puts the ball in Peppers hands longer and gives him the option to run/pass, what have you.

I expect a LOT of 3-5 yard passess this year at least at first. And I doubt they will run 2 backs like that UNLESS they plan on baseing the offense on running. Which I hope they do, I just dont see it happeneing.

When moore was starting,we had a running game.(i had him on my fantasy team, he was good for 100 yards most games but no td's)
When moore got hurt our running game disapeared?
Was it because he was lucky, and got to run on bad run defenses? hmmmmmmmm
Smith is too inconsistent, looks good one week, and bad the next, and can he stay away from the cheeba?
bennett is a injury waiting to happen.
just my 2 cents.

let them battle it out during training and mini camps. Then we will know who the best quality and starting back for next season will be. We don't need to be worrying about this now. I bet the dolphins would kill to be in the situatuation we are in yet we are complaining.

Let's worry about the draft and our D-- our biggest need.

ontero smith is my pick for the starting job and i agree with the intial post that moore could easily be our #4 or #5 receiver. i really like thguy. however, even though loney said they will feature a back i have feeling that it will be a discussion all next year and we will plit the time again. bennett is a baby when it comes to playing time.

trading one of them: bennett or smith will help this team out realistically.

Onterrio Smith even though he's in a little trouble off the field seems to be the best back consistently (s.p). Moore looked good in the games he was in but it took him forever to get back after his injury. Bennett just is too inconsistent for me, he'll have a great game and then dissappear the next and/or get injuried

Angryviking

And also getting rid of Bennett would just get rid of another whiner who cries when he doesn't get any playing time, even if someone else out there is tearing it up for us

You can never have too many RBs. They get knocked around a lot as it is a high risk injury-prone position. A Bennett trade and then picking up a rookie RB from the draft (which is deep in RB talent) would have us set for a few years. It makes sense because he's an injury waiting to happen and we should trade him while we can still get something.

However, if we don't trade him, we should go with the more durable Smith as the feature back and have Bennett line up as a receiver to go deep with his speed a la Westbrook. Moore can continue with his special teams duties where he has been very good. Moe can be our short yardage specialist.

When our backup RBs are this good, let's find something for them to do other than warming the bench!

It doesnt matter who we have back there honestly. They have all proven they can, at one point, get the job done... Why? Because of our offensive line, and our ability to pass the ball.

The problem I hate with Bennett is if there isnt a hole there to run through, he just puts his head down and runs into 300 pound + defensive lineman. He NEEDS the hole.

Unfortunately, I wasnt able to see MM play due to being at the biggest beach ive ever seen. From what ive heard he has very poor blocking skills in pass pro. But is a very good target out of the backfield.

The reason why I believe we should stick with Onterrio is that he finishes runs. He hits the hole hard, and if its not there, he creates and makes plays. He is also the most durable of the backs and I think that is what we need. Consistancy. He is the least likely to break down and I believe he can get the job done.

me mo really looked the best at getting into the d fencive secondary , let alone following flyingsasser to knock that line backer that had been putting that the first hit 6 yards past line o scrim. o smith also looked good but didn't look as explosive
