Be interesting to know why this has come about, was he just not cutting it in the way Zimmer wants or are we now settled with the safeties that we have?
Just seemed early in the off season to cut someone already.

It's because Mays is a bum. Has been for a few years.

it is amazing that he cannot make a team. He has unbelievable measurables, does he not get the schemes? Does he not have the ability to recognize a play? He has great speed for a safety and he can hit. He must be missing something though when your own coach passes you up for another safety in the draft you know something is wrong.

Since he was cut this early, I think we can draw one conclusion... he is not coachable, at least in Zimmer's mind. He was a known commodity for Zimmer, and to not even make it to minicamp (in my mind) means he did not accomplish the first directives Zimmer had for him.

Current Contract

Taylor Mays signed a 1 year, $795,000 contract with the Minnesota Vikings, including a $25,000 signing bonus, $25,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $795,000. In 2015, Mays will earn a base salary of $745,000, a signing bonus of $25,000 and a roster bonus of $25,000. Mays has a cap hit of $795,000 while his dead money value is $25,000 (http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/minnesota-vikings/taylor-mays/).

You don't cut the guy unless you have guys that are as good or guys that show more potential. We paid him 25,000 to lock him down and see how he compared to the guys we have already. Mays didn't cut it I guess.

There's probably more of a reason to it than just the skill but I suppose the skill isn't enough to justify whatever the other problem is

He was probably the most physically gifted safety to come out in the last decade. Size, speed, strength, agility...and a completely lack of football IQ.

Could be they know he is not going to make the team and they cut him early giving him a chance to sign with another team. Also there may be guys coming available from other teams they want to sign and they need the space on the 90 person roster.

Along with they usually have an idea of how many players they will keep at each position to hit their roster limitations 90 down to being able to have guys that will also clear waivers on 53 man roster cuts. You can't hide Mays anywhere.

It seems it will be a small chance for him to make a roster. Looks like luck and time not on his side.
