As the Ponder talk is kind of getting out of hand and taking over the other thread, I thought it would be nice to hear everyone's thoughts about other aspects of the game, which should give us a chance to do some actual analysis of the game beyond just "OMG, Ponder sucks!1!". So absolutely NO mentioning of Ponder in this thread!

+ Jerome Simpson made a couple of nice catches. He looked really good out there. Maybe keeping him around was the right call after all. After how many times he's let us down, it still seems like he's He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's favorite receiver.

+ Harrison Smith was everywhere. He is so fun to watch

+ We shut down Calvin Johnson, in fact, their entire receiving corp was held to under 150 yards, despite our lack of pass rush, so our secondary played really well, even Josh Robinson. Rhodes looked solid out there.

- Our defense was absolutely terrible. They probably should have given up closer to 45 points

- Our defensive line didn't get much pressure, although we had a few nice bat-downs

- The linebacking was terrible. We absolutely could not handle their runningbacks. Not in the run game or the passing game. Why in the world is Bishop not playing?

- Our offensive line was not very good, especially in the run game

- And I forgot to mention the coaching. The playcalling was terrible. We're really going to run draws and swing passes when down by two scores with under 5 minutes to go? We're so predictable. It seems like we don't really gameplan for teams, we just kind of do our thing, which has proven to be ineffective. It was interesting to watch the 49ers play after the Vikings, because there were so many plays and situations that you could tell they ran based on the tendencies of the other team or something they picked up on during the course of the game, both on offense and defense, and they were successful for the most part. I feel like we never see that with the Vikings.
Also, no Patterson or Bishop? Come on.

Overall, we were bad, really bad. There were a couple bright spots, but they were few and far between. We could be in for a long season if we don't get better in a hurry.

After how many times he's let us down, it still seems like he's He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's favorite receiver. He did have some nice grabs. Hopefully this game wasn't an anomaly for him. We'll have to wait and see I suppose.

+ Harrison Smith was everywhere. He is so fun to watch Yeah, Fun to watch this kid play. Lots of talent. Can't believe the coaches didn't leave him on the bench and start Andrew Sendejo. Seems to be their M.O.

Rhodes looked solid out there. Yes, this actually made me quite happy. I realize our corners didn't have the best game, but there's a lot to be said holding Calvin Johnson to 37 yards. Rhodes and Cook will develop into a nice CB duo.

- The linebacking was terrible. We absolute could not handle their runningbacks. Not in the run game or the passing game. No Desmond Bishop? Audie Cole had more snaps? Seriously? I place the blame on the coaching staff for this one.

- Our offensive line was not very good, especially in the run game This one really shocked me, our OL is supposed to be a strength. Not sure what's up, hope they figure it out soon.

Preach on, brother.

Ah yes, you reminded me that I forgot to mention the awful coaching. I edited the OP.

Should have made it a positive only thread but it may not have many posts !
Robinson definitely played better. I will eat crow for doubting Simpson, though only a bite or two until he has more than one good game.
Most of the negatives have been touched on but I will agree with tasty when he says Guion should ride the pine more often. Also agree with Brick that Bishop should be starting and I think he should be playing in the middle. Henderson doesn't have enough lead in his pencil in the run game.
Floyd didn't play as well as I expected. And why is Patterson so under utilized.
Can't win with good players and bad coaching.
Vikings have significant problems, the coaching staff not being the least of them.

It's going to be a long long season. Fortunately over the last 48 years I have learned how to grin and bear it, although the grin has turned to more of a grimace. But cheer up next year we get to play outdoors in the cold and snow. LOL

Nice list Randy.

Harrison Smith seemed to be the only guy who could tackle Bush and the only guy on defense I can remember that had a good game. Rhodes was okay, especially since it was his first start against a pass heavy team in Detroit. Robinson I agree looked better. His play on Sunday was better than anything I saw in preseason.

Simpson had a career day. Over 50% of his 2012 production. Ponder/Simpson combo...what legends are made of..

Why Frazier/Williams won't play Bishop is beyond me. The LB play yesterday was the biggest weak spot among a number of weak spots.

The whole game just felt like a preseason rehearsal. Very sloppy, poor fundamentals, no physicality and no adjustments. Hopefully they realize by next weekend that the season has started. We beat good teams last year (SF, Houston and GB) because we beat them up. I didn't see any of that in Detroit.

This thread is like evaluating a porno but leaving out the parts with sex in them.

I guess it didn't surprise me to see a team playing poorly @ Ford Field. The Lions have been doing it for much of the past 12 years.

The Lions whooped our ass pretty good on both sides of the ball.
The best thing about this game is it was on the road, and I never expect to win more than a couple road games a season(conversely I expect to win every home game).
The worst thing about this game was how bad our O-line got dominated. This is the same group that started all 16 games last year, I expected improvement, but saw decline.

1. Greenway looked very slow, one of his worst games
2. Something looks wrong with Kalil
3. What happened to Rudolph in the 2nd half??

Scott Linehan knows the Vikings defense, and he exploited it using Bush and Megatron.

The Vikings could not exploit the 44 dogs that Detroit was sending after Peterson and Ponder. That is one deep safety, and the Vikings could not exploit it. Imagine Montana, Young, or Marino looking at that read with Peterson in the backfield.
