I didn't expect this after he left to look at other teams. Nice signing.

Ha!

I just posted today that since he left without a contract that he was unlikely to sign ( which was using the reverse Jedi mind trick) and it worked lol.

Good signing ... Hope they put him in the right spot.

Definitely a depth signing here, but hopefully he can start for us and at least make the ILB position competitive during the season. I hope he can stay healthy and make some plays for us. Good pickup by Spielman and Co.

Adam Caplan asked two NFL executives about Bishop's strengths and weaknesses and the negatives included a lack of speed and coverage ability. Bishop was pegged as a two-down linebacker who can be exposed when isolated in coverage. Those weaknesses could make him an awkward fit at outside linebacker, a position Henderson has excelled at during his career.
In the Tampa 2, the MIKE often plays a center deep zone. Cover ability is a required skill.

Vikings sign ex-Green Bay linebacker Desmond Bishop to 1-year deal

Bishop was released by the Green Bay Packers a week ago, worked out for the Vikings last week and was signed by the team to a one-year deal Monday.

Bishop was a very productive player for the Packers; he had 218 total tackles in 2010 and 2011 before having to miss the 2012 season because of a hamstring injury.

Another one year deal? No options for a second year at least?

Actually there was some consideration put into that. By offering more than the one year minimum, and not taking advantage of the minimum salary benefit rule for cap space, the Vikings give themselves the ability to resign before free agency starts.

The biggest benefit from not using the minimum-salary benefit comes from the ability to extend the playerís contract before the start of free agency in the next league year. Any veteran player who signs the one-year deal for the reduced cap charge canít sign a new contract with his current team until it expires, necessarily putting him on the open market.

If Bishop is healthy, I think he will be an upgrade over Brinkley in coverage skills and an overall upgrade in talent.

The big question for me is whether or not he is healthy. Last year he was paid ~$3.5M that most folks thought he more than earned. This year he is taking a one year $1.35M pay, which appears to be the market value. GB, NY, KC all reportedly were offering similar deals. Has to be due to the hamstring concern.

I think it is a bit of a risk that could have good upside, but the price was right to give him a shot. Similar to Mauti. I guess if you get enough of these guys, one of them will beat the odds? In either case, the cost is pretty low to take the gamble.

He's only 28, kinda suprised they didn't try to lock him up for more than 1 year. Maybe they learned something from the Carlson signing a year ago.

His agent likely suggested a one year contract believing that Bishop would be underpaid because of his hamstring injury.

A "show me" contract is a gamble for both sides.

well one year works for me. If he can play at a full level and show that he's recovered then we have the chance to keep him a lot longer. This could work well for both sides

I read an article yesterday (can't find it now) that didn't provide a lot of hope for a successful return from this type of injury. In fact most players who returned didn't play more than 2 games before leaving with injury again.

I'll be very surprised if he plays the Mike for us at all. Just because he played "ILB" in a 3-4 does not mean he can play the Mike in a 4-3.

I'm going to be very surprised if our starting backers in our base isn't Chad/Bishop (OLB), Henderson (MLB) with both Erin and Bishop taking reps in the nickel to stay fresh.

Assuming Bishop has fully recovered from his hamstring rupture, I can see him playing either the weak side or the middle. I don't think there is a great deal of separation between the two players strengths. I think Bishop is the better linebacker of the two no matter the position.

I agree 100%. I'm giving the edge to Erin because of the familiarity with our coaching staff and the 4-3 scheme we run.

I think that we will be able to flip flop them in and out will keep them both fresh for the entire season and will really mess with O-coord minds.
