Terms were not immediately available on Cassel's deal, but it figures to fall in that same $3 million a year range.

Well we should pay 3, so that probably means we will pay 4+

That didn't take long.

I am actually fine with this, depending on the finances.

Ponder hasn't shown great durability and competition breeds success.

This front office is an absolute JOKE.

Veteran backup that won't cost a fortune. Solid move by the Vikings.
They'll call it a competition but I think it's still Ponder's job to lose.

Matt Cassel is the last guy you want on your football team. No leadership. Weak arm. Bad decisions. Injury prone. What am I missing? He is Christian Ponder with a worse attitude.

Matt Cassel will average about $4m/yr with Minn, with chance to earn more if he plays. 2 yr deal can be voided after 2013 by the QB

So predictable...

really ??? actually the last person you want your team pretending to be a QB is Joe Webb bad decisions, weak arm, looks like Bambi in the right light ( usually headlights ).
At least if Ponder is the starter and goes down then we have something close to a playcaller to go to. If he beats Ponder out for the #1 spot then so be it.

These are the other veterans available

Do the other failed staters and former first round busts really look any better?

Also I'm curious how you would have any idea what kind of attitude Matt Cassel has?

Actually Ryan Fitzpatrick would have been MUCH better...

Harvard grad with the highest score in the history of the wonderlic. Happy being a back-up. Would come in, do a great job, and not cause any problems. Not to mention the beard envy...C'mon! lol. Fitz > Cassel all day.

I would have much rather got Chase Daniel at 3 years $10 million.

High risk, high reward. If it's a backup that has to come in for the first time in the playoffs like last year, I'd prefer the veteran to the guy who has only been a backup.

While I agree the QB position has improved, $4M is too much. He's one of the best paid backups in the league.

Hmm, so I am guessing he doesn't play all that much then opts out for a better opportunity, or, he ends up playing some and playing well, then opts out for a starting job with a different team. Either way, looks like he is here for 1 season only.

I'm ok with this move. Just maybe should have signed him for 2 years for sure instead of the opt out clause.

Im ok with this, i think as a backup, this is a very solid addition.. And should he play then i think under the right circumstances, he can succeed... He has had good seasons before both in NE and KC. Very good seasons.

Cassel might beat out Ponder. He is not very good. It won't take much.

Yes he did and without a Peterson. Cassel can read the field better than Plunder.

That is the only part that makes me OK with this deal. Not wild about keeping 2 QBs that I don't want. BUT... the guy scouted teams with Bill Belichick and took reps with Tom Brady. Can't put a price on experience like that.

Also love that the cap number is 4.20...um... because that's my lucky number.

Beating Ponder out for the #1 spot is like winning the ugly girl contest at the prom.
