Love the move. We need another high level TE in Musgrave's offense. Carlson is one of the best in the league when he's healthy. That being said, we are completely ignoring our top needs like our secondary that couldn't possibly be totally fixed in the draft alone.

Walter gives this an F.
WalterFootball.com: 2012 NFL Free Agency Recap (http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2012recap.php)

"Vikings sign TE John Carlson (5 years, $25M; $11M guaranteed): F Grade
The Vikings are apparently trying to recreate New England's two-tight end offense. The problem is that one of their tight ends suck. And it's the guy they just gave $25 million to.

Talk about overpaying. Carlson is both mediocre (at best) and injury-prone. In what bizarro universe is he worth $25 million, with $11 million of it guaranteed? An even more important question: Did Matt Millen and his LSD-laced kielbasas have a hand in this transaction as well? "

I am obviously a big Spielman hater. But Walter is a hack. Mediocre at best? He's obviously never even watched him play.

He is actually a very good TE, as long as he stays healthy it is a good pick up.

If he can stay healthy this will be a solid move. That is a big if though. People have expected big things out of him for a while and he has not really produced.

I like the signing though as I wanted us to bring in another TE and there were not a ton of big names out there.

I am not upset with the signing. I think it was a need with shainco leaving. But I am also of the opinion that you gave a guy 11 million in Guarantees that has three concussions and a torn labrum (sp) that caused him to miss all of last season. I get this whole build threw the draft movement everyone is talking about... but does anyone besides speilam and Ziggy actually think this is the right coaching/front office staff to pull this off... Name one player in the last 5 drafts taken after the second round that has developed into a key player on this team.. hell I can only think of 2 second rounderís... cook and rice... rice left in free agency and cook is about to sign with the Minnesota penitentiary system... I am so disappointed with this team... how can you sell hope and ask for over 600 hundred million to build a stadium and then turn around and give up on your current team. I understand they have a lot of needs but to think you can just flip a switch and start drafting better talent is asinine. If they had a good enough scouting department to find talent in the draft we wouldnít be in this position in the first place. We have the same scouting department we have had for the last 10 years... And based on the body of work it is not that impressive... short of AP, Greenway and Harvin can you seriously say the Vikings even drafted correctly in the first round? 3 out of 10 in the first round and 2 out of 100 in the later rounds are not real inspiring... My biggest fear is they set the team back another 4 years once they fire spielman and Frasier after the 2-14 season they will have next year!
Meanwhile you have the bears packers and lions getting better each year and the gap between the Vikings and the rest of the NFC North continues to grow...I thought things were bad during the McCombs cheap skate area... But I honestly think Ziggy is worse... My point is this... I see a team who in the last 2 years went from 1 dumb play out of going to a super bowl to a team that will be lucky to compete on a weekly basis and get 3 wins next season. Who has been held accountable for this lack of depth on the roster and horrible decisions that were made...? I understand Chilly was an idiot but he was not the only one making decisions... so my whole point is... I am fine with a youth movement and changing of philosophy by looking to build through the draft instead of FA... but the first step should have been to bring in a new GM a new scouting department and develop an identity from that... I seriously want to ask the team...ok if you are confident that this same group of idiots who have run a team that was a consistent playoff contender and in the NFC championship 3 times in the last 10 years into the ground how can you turn things around... are you telling me you havenít been trying to build the team through the draft the last 10 years? If not what the hell were you doing?

I like the pick up, even if it is a gamble.
There are not many TE options in the draft, or free agency.
Big target for ponder.
He's a local talent, Litchfield, MN highschool.
He's young, only 27 years old.
Hopefully will develop a strong bond with Rudolph, both went to Notre Dame.
Reminds me a lot of when they overpaid Shiancoe.

My brother said it best: "We don't need household names. We need football players!" Given that Shiancoe seems to be leaving, and with Kleinsasser retiring, TE was becoming a critical need in my opinion. This helps address that critical need. I'm fine with this signing. Hopefully, this helps Ponder and the offense get better.

Not sure about injury prone could somebody fill me in on his history other than the torn labrum last year and a concussion in a playoff game against the Bears

As for the reports of mediocre he was the Seahawks leading receiver in 2008 as a rookie....only other rookie Seahawk to do that was Largent.

He also had to 2 td catches against the Saints in the Seahawks last playoff win

An OK (albeit pricey) move. Does anyone know if he can block?
Injuries scare me but he did have time to heal. Didn't know he had that many concussions though.

Lived in Seattle for a number of years, co-workers with a guy who lived there until two months ago, and we're bother fans of the 'hawks. I'm, of course, a larger Vikes fan, but the point is to establish the fact that I've watched the kid play.

He is a pretty fantastic receiving tight end. Good hands, good routes, finds space.

Terrible blocker. Not good at all.

Terrible move.
1. Rudolph was developing into a NFL starter, so you either have to have this guy as a backup or shelve Rudolph. Don't give me the 2TE set BS because it was proven last season that we were rarely using that set in passing downs.

2. 5 million a year for a TE? Even worst 5 Million a year for a TE than Rudolph should quickly bypass in talent? Put it this way, Nicks got 9 million a year. Would you still sign Nicks for 4 million? This money should go towards a guard, something we don't have!!! We have a serviceable TE. We don't have an oline. We dont have Cbs. We dont have Safeties, We don't have LBs. Thank god almighty that we signed a backup TE for 5 million dollars...Dumb Dumb Dumb!

3. He's injury prone and quickly lost his starting job to Miller. The other TEs on the market are just as talented and nowhere the price. Gates and Davis made 6.5 million last season. Are you telling me that this guy is somewhere close to their talent? Crack is Wack. My prediction, this guy gets 40 receptions 430 yards 4tds and we look like true fools.

4. Fire Spielman!

He's got the talent to put up good/great receiving numbers for a TE, but he wont be on the field enough to do it. Furthermore, there's no offensive line to protect the quarterback, so he'll spend half the snaps that he's in on performing pass protection, which is his weakest point.

He won't put up great numbers with us. Rudolph is going to have a huge Spring and this guy will ride the pine. You drafted a TE in the 2nd round and then go out and sign a guy 5 million a year to be his backup/ start over him. Either way, we are idiots.
